If you’ve ever texted or emailed with someone from Thailand you are sure to have received a 555 in one of their messages. It’s a bit mysterious and confusing the first time you see it. Like maybe they hit the key by accident. It took me quite a while to figure out its meaning – actually I never figured it out on my own, someone had to tell me.
So, if you’ve ever been wondering what 555 means in Thailand, here it is:
Writing 555 is the same as using hahaha or lol in your message.
Yup, it is that simple. Next time you see it you’ll know they are joking around, having a laugh, or thought what they wrote is funny (don’t we all).
So where did using 555 in Thailand come from?
I’ve actually seen a fair bit of discussion and debate about this when people first started using 555. We were all confused farang after all. However, I think it is well understood at this point. The number five in Thailand ห้า sounds like Ha. So, 555 = HaHaHa. Pretty straightforward right?
I find it interesting how they could take an English expression, convert it to Thai, then make it their own by using the number 5. But that’s probably just me.
So now you know. Next time you see it you’ll know they are laughing at you. 555. 🙂
