Jolly Friar Fish & Chips – Soi Lengkee (Review)

If you are looking to eat some good Fish and Chips or craving some British comfort food, give the Jolly Friar on Soi Lengkee a try.  This restaurant serves a variety of fish, meat pies, and has a selection of side dishes to choose from as well.  They also have a nice Thai menu and serve beer, wine, and spirits.

After having the worst excuse for fish and chips at the restaurant in the Adelphi Hotel, a friend recommended I head over to the Jolly Friar and give it a try.  I’m glad I did.  The restaurant is about a quarter of the way up Soi Lengkee on the left-hand side as you come from Soi Buakhao.  It is sandwiched between a beauty salon/laundry and the Lone Star Texas Grill, right across the street from the New Nikom Court Hotel.

The restaurant is small and quaint, there are 4 tables outside and six tables inside with air conditioning. , As I arrived a little later in the evening I had my pick of places to sit and opted to sit inside with the air con and cool off a bit.

The place is clean, well lit, and decorated in a fun blue and white nautical theme.    There are paintings of fishing scenes on the wall and a few replicas of a fish and shark hanging from the ceiling.

The Jolly Friar offers fish & chips made from a few different types of fillets.  You can choose from the John Dory, Norwegian Cod (Medium or Large) or the Tilapia.  They are breaded in your choice of beer batter or breadcrumbs.  I went for the Medium Cod filets in beer batter.

The food came out quickly and the fish was served with slices of lemon and lime, a side of tartar sauce, and of course chips.  I enjoyed the meal.  The fish was light and flaky and the fries were crisp and not soggy or overcooked.  It’s probably not a meal I’d write home about, but for good fish & chips in Pattaya, the Jolly Friar is a good choice, and I’ll surely be back again.

Cost:

Norwegian Cod Fillet (Medium) with Chips: 219 Baht

Coke: 25 Baht

Total: 244 Baht

If you are in the mood for a little dessert, they also have a pretty good selection of Haagen-Dazs Ice Cream which looked really good.  My growing waistline precluded me from giving it a go, but maybe next time I’ll give it a go.

The Jolly Friar also delivers in Pattaya.  You can check out their menu on FoodPanda.

*I somehow forgot to take pictures of the outside and inside of the Jolly Friar, so those photos above are not mine.  The photo of the food is.  I can’t remember where I got those photos to give proper credit, if you are the owner I will happily give proper credit or take them down if you desire.
